New Research on Shock Wave for Early-Stage OA

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy Shows Chondroprotective Effects in Osteoarthritic Rat Knee

by Wang, C.J. et al.
Archives of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery
June 2011

Involves a preclinical study of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) using the same type of shock wave device as the VersaTron veterinary technology.  It reports the results of research utilizing ESWT to prevent and repair osteoarthritis damage.  The research concludes that early application of ESWT shows improvement in subchondral bone remodeling and a cartilage protection effect in early stage OA Note: that the SANUWAVE (former parent of PulseVet) OssaTron device used at a 14kV energy setting is equivalent to our VersaTron used at energy setting E6. Visit www.sanuwave.com for additional details on human shock wave research.

Summary of Key Study Findings:

  • A single shock wave procedure prevented or significantly improved surgically induced osteoarthritis damage to the knee in an animal model.
  • A single shock wave procedure significantly decreased articular cartilage degradation and improved subchondral bone remodeling.
  • When treated with shock wave, surgically compromised knees displayed comparable data to the control group of normal, healthy knees at 12 weeks post-treatment.
  • Multiple analyses of articular cartilage, subchondral bone, and blood and urine protein markers suggest that early application of shock wave provides a chondroprotective effect to prevent osteoarthritis onset.

The authors concluded that ESWT acts as a mechanotransduction catalyst that initiates complex biological pathways that lead to tissue regeneration in the knee joint.
